DISCO partner IBR presenting at the IFSCC Congress

October 10, 2016

Israeli Biotechnology Research Ltd. (IBR) will be presenting work performed as part of the DISCO project at the 29th International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists Congress (IFSCC) taking place from 30th October until 2nd November, 2016 in Orlando, Florida, USA.

The congress focuses on the latest breakthroughs in cosmetic science, showcasing innovative developments through over 70 podium presentations and more than 300 poster presentations.

Dr. Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, Dr. Michal Shevach, Dr. Fabien Havas, Dr. Eyal Kalo, Olga Ben-Chitrit and Dr. Avi Shtevi from IBR will be presenting a poster entitled: “Fluorescent naturals for instant and long-term skin beauty benefits”.

One focus of the work presented is the leveraging of the fluorescent properties of phytofluene, under UV and sin light. Phytofluene, a naturally occurring colorless carotenoid (delivered as solanum lycopersicum fruit extract) delivers instant skin lightening and redness reduction as a result of this property. This was demonstrated using quantitative measures (colorimeter) in a pilot panel, which showed an increase in L* (skin brightness) of 1.7 units vs. placebo and a concomitant decrease in a* (skin redness) of 3.4 units vs. placebo. The changes observed were immediate (measured at 1h), statistically significant vs. placebo, and of a consumer-noticeable magnitude.

The colorless carotenoids phytoene and phytofluene, key actives in IBR active ingredient products, have multiple benefits for skin. These benefits include high anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as absorbing UV light. They were shown in several trials to visibly enhance skin quality, delivering strong anti-wrinkle effects, evening and lightening skin tone, providing photoprotection, and reducing the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks. In the studies reported above, IBR makes use of the materials’ natural fluorescence, leveraging color opponency theory, to deliver safe, measurable, and consumer-perceptible beauty benefits.
