SOL 2015 conference – the ideal platform for dedicated Solanaceae researchers

October 23, 2015

From 25-29 October 2015 the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) opens its doors for the 12th Solanaceae Conference (SOL 2015) in Bordeaux (France). The event will address the latest scientific research on Solanaceae, ranging from biodiversity, genetics and plant development and breeding.

Researchers’ part of the DISCO project will talk at the SOL 2015 conference:

  • Marilise Nogueira of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHUL), coordinating institution of DISCO, will give a presentation titled "Tomato, a cell factory for the production of high value ketocarotenoids"”. Marilise will give insights into the results of a study carried out within the DISCO project demonstrating the generic use of tomato fruit as a cell factory to deliver a renewable source of high value compounds.
  • The Italian DISCO partner institution ENEA, represented by Giovanni Giuliano who will report on the results of a study which examined why most wild tomato species stay green throughout ripening, while cultivated tomato shows during ripening a change in colour from green to yellow/orange and red.
  • Mark Taylor representative of the Scottish Mark Taylor representative of the Scottish James Hutton Institute (JHI) will present the results of a study which investigated the variation of Solanesol level in potato leaf. Solanesol is one of the targeted molecules in the DISCO project and has useful medical properties, e.g. in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, cancer and atherosclerosis.

The objective of the SOL 2015 conference is to bring together members of the Solanaceae scientific community who contribute to the recent and considerable advances in Solanaceae genomics and use this knowledge to further the fundamental understanding of plant biology and to breed superior crop varieties well adapted to their environment.
